Ok, so maybe this wasn’t intentional on the part of the Danish government, but it still is very amusing. First, there was news that the Danish health committee intends to remove being transgender from the country’s list of mental disorders.
The change to the official classification will take effect on Jan. 1, 2017, Agence France-Presse reports. Danish parliamentarians also say the move is meant to put pressure on the World Health Organization (WHO), which is yet to officially remove transsexualism from its list of mental and behavioral disorders.
“It is completely inappropriate to call it a sickness,” Flemming Moller Mortensen, the Danish health committee’s deputy chairman, told AFP. The WHO plans to discuss the proposed change later this year.
Cue social conservative head implosions in 3… 2… 1.
While that was exciting all on its own, since there really is no reason to keep transsexualism classified as a mental disorder, the next headline from Denmark was probably lessened the blow of that first headline a little for the conservatives. It seems that financial reality is setting in over there. Queen Magrethe II’s heirs simply cannot expect to be paid by the Danish citizens for life – or anymore.
Danish politicians are planning to limit the number of the Queen’s grandchildren who will receive an annual salary from the state.
Queen Margrethe II has eight grandchildren with politicians stating that “simple mathematics” would require them to look again who is eligible for funding.
There has been cross-party that Crown Prince Frederik’s son, Prince Christian, will continue to receive the state-funded salary as he is second-in-line to the throne.
Prince Christian’s three younger siblings and the four children of the Queen’s second son, Prince Joachim, are thought to lose their eligibility.
So, if you’re in line for the throne, you’ll be paid. If not, looks like you’ll actually have to get a job! In case anyone is wondering, yes there is some talk brewing in the UK about the financial support of their own royals. Any fans of that royal family should be quick to point out that the entire royal family over there still costs UK citizens less than the Obama family has cost Americans each year. Just saying…
