It’s a banner day for free speech, or something. First, it was the issue of businesses having the right to censor, because of profits. Then there was a glimmer of hope for the future of political incorrectness. Now, #IStandWithHateSpeech is trending on Twitter!

Of course, some people might want to lay credit for this with Donald Trump, and his vitriol. Tempting as that may be, the bottom line is that he’s merely taking advantage of a swing of the cultural pendulum. This wave is just part of a backlash against the attempts of radicals from both left and right to suppress dissenting opinions, while both simultaneously claim that the other is to blame for the censorship.

So, what caused this current “love” of hate speech?

The radicals have been squabbling long enough, and now the middle is finally saying enough is enough. While it might be a little unpleasant, the fact is that people actually do enjoy being made uncomfortable from time to time. If they didn’t, there wouldn’t be amusement parks, which typically have plenty of people standing in line to ride the attractions that will throw them around the most. Hollywood wouldn’t have piles of thrillers and horror movies each year, either. Finally, as any comedian will tell you, political correctness simply isn’t funny. If you want to really laugh, there must be political incorrectness in the arsenal.

Of course, on the more cerebral end, people become mentally lazy if they are not forced to deal with opposing views.
