Among the “controversies” at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards in the UK over the weekend was Rebel Wilson’s appearance on stage to give out the award for “Best Supporting Actor.” Of course, she couldn’t do it “straight,” so her speech was peppered with politically incorrect comments, making her appearance more like a string of film industry punchlines. That in itself would be amusing enough, but then there was a slice and dice job done to what she said, by HuffPost Entertainment.
No, you didn’t read that wrong. Yes, that was the generally leftist HuffPost congratulating Wilson for being politically incorrect. More than that, the speech is being spread far and wide in clip form with titles proclaiming that it is just ripping on the #OscarsSoWhite meme. Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that HuffPost Entertainment actually did get it right by saying that Wilson nailed it in her speech. Political correctness has long been accused of causing the death of comedy, and every person who says that is absolutely correct. The formula is simple, really. If people cannot manage to laugh at themselves, they will fail to see humor in anything at all. No one can laugh at themselves if they are too busy crying that they need special treatment.
While the slice and dice job by HuffPost Entertainment does get to the “best” parts, they aren’t really in order. Context matters a little, and honestly, the rest of it is worth viewing. (If you just want the funny part, feel free to hit stop once they start introducing the nominees.
